Project at a Glance
In 2025, HuaQuan Power delivered 8 x 2000 kVA diesel generators to a Tier III data center campus in Jakarta, Indonesia. The project required Uptime Institute Tier III compliance (concurrently maintainable), 48-hour fuel autonomy, under 8-second transfer time, and integration with the facility\'s SCADA/BMS via Modbus TCP. All units feature PMG-excited alternators for non-linear load (UPS) tolerance and parallel with the utility via closed-transition transfer switches.

⚠ The Challenge
A 20MW IT load data center campus required 100% backup power with concurrent maintainability (any single component can be maintained without disrupting operations). Key challenges: UPS systems present leading power factor and harmonic distortion (THD up to 10%); Indonesia Power (PLN) grid reliability in Cikarang averaged 12 outages/year; seismic zone requirements (SNI 1726); tropical climate with 35°C ambient and 85% humidity year-round; and noise limits of 55 dBA at property line due to nearby residential area. Additionally, the local utility required closed-transition (make-before-break) transfer to prevent voltage sags during monthly generator testing.
✔ The Solution
HuaQuan Power designed a 2N distributed redundant architecture: two independent power trains (A and B), each with 4 x 2000 kVA generators synchronized on a common bus, feeding separate UPS systems. Any N generators per train can be maintained while the remaining units provide full backup. Key features: PMG-excited Stamford PI734 alternators with 2/3 pitch for harmonic tolerance (THD <5% at full non-linear load); closed-transition ASCO 7000 Series transfer switches; GEA heat exchangers with corrosion-resistant CuNi tubes for tropical humidity; QSX15-driven radiator fans with VFD speed control for noise reduction; seismic-rated base frames and spring isolators per SNI 1726; and ComAp InteliSys NTC BaseBox controllers with dual Ethernet for BMS integration (Modbus TCP + BACnet/IP). Factory testing included full-load resistive+reactive (0.8 PF) test at 48-hour continuous run, witnessed by Uptime Institute consultant.

Project Results
- Uptime Institute certification: Achieved Tier III Design and Facility certifications on first submission (March 2025).
- Load test: All 8 units ran 48-hour continuous full load test at 0.8 PF. Zero failures, voltage regulation within ±0.5% (spec: ±1%).
- Transfer time: 6.8 seconds average (spec: <8s). Closed-transition monthly testing causes zero voltage disturbance to IT load.
- Harmonics: THD measured at 3.2% at full non-linear load (UPS + VFD cooling) vs 5% specification.
- Fuel consumption: 392 L/h per unit at 75% load. Annual fuel cost 12% below competitor\'s original proposal.
- Remote integration: Fully integrated with customer\'s Niagara N4 BMS. Real-time generator status, fuel levels, and maintenance alerts visible on central dashboard.
Key Takeaways
- Data center generators must tolerate non-linear loads (UPS, VFDs). PMG excitation + 2/3 pitch alternator winding is the gold standard.
- 2N distributed redundant architecture allows maintenance on any generator without taking the data center offline — a Uptime Institute Tier III requirement.
- Closed-transition transfer switches (make-before-break) eliminate voltage disturbances during monthly generator testing — critical for UPS-protected IT loads.
- Tropical environments require corrosion-resistant heat exchangers (CuNi tubes) and IP44 or higher enclosures for humidity and condensation protection.
- Indonesia\'s data center market is growing at 26% CAGR (2024-2030), driven by Jakarta\'s 180M+ internet users and data localization regulations.
- Third-party commissioning witness (Uptime Institute, Bureau Veritas) adds credibility but requires meticulous documentation — plan for 500+ pages of test reports.
Project Summary
The Nusantara Data Center project represents HuaQuan Power\'s largest data center deployment to date. Eight 2000 kVA generators in a 2N configuration provide 16,000 kVA of backup power for a Tier III facility in Jakarta. The installation achieved Uptime Institute certification on first attempt, demonstrating HuaQuan\'s capability in mission-critical power infrastructure for the world\'s most demanding industry. The PMG alternator design, closed-transition transfer, and tropical-grade engineering highlight HuaQuan\'s comprehensive approach to data center power solutions.
